Introduction
Fengyu Cave is a river cave, with 4,300m of river passages, and 5,300m total length. The cave was named after the fengyu, the red fish, which is living in the cave river. Ganghu Cave is the name of the dry cave entrance. Here the river enters the cave, but in a lower level beneath today’s cave entrance. Dabayan Cave is the other natural cave entrance, where the cave river leaves the cave system. Both entrances were known for long, but the discovery of their connection is very recent, which explains why the same cave has two different names.
The cave tour is done by boat on the underground river. In huge chamber, the cave contains a sort of underground pub or discotheque with kitchen, music and a dance floor.
The cave has fine speleothems, like dripstones, helictites, and curtains. Characteristic are fast growing and slim stalagmites, which are several meters high and only about 10 or 20cm in diameter. Beneath coloured light all over the cave, some stalagmites are enhanced by numerous lights all around, which make them look like ancient pagodas.
The cave is located in the tower karst with 300m high karst towers around. The cave river comes from the nearby sandstone hills of Dayao, entering the Devonian limestone only 3km away from the cave entrance. |
