Since Chongqing became a municipality directly under the central government eight years ago, its transition in telecommunications from analog technology to digital technology, from telephone network to information network, from narrowband Internet to broad-band Internet, and from a singular network to an integrated network, as well as smart network, has been fulfilled. This multifunctional modern network has expanded to almost every corner of the city. consisting of optical fiber cables, satellite and digital microwave technology, integrating digitalized transmission and program-control exchange, geared to the needs of the building of an information city of Chongqing. Presently, 9.08 million mobile phone users or 32 percent of the population are found in Chongqing; while there are 6.99 million fixed phone users, constituting 25.2 percent of the population; 1.23 million people have access to the Internet, with 1.80 million registered online. The delivery network, integrated computer network and financial computer network of the postal industry have been established. As an international mail exchange bureau, the Chongqing postal system has established relations with some 200 countries and regions, and serves as an important hub of postal communication in southwest China.
