Chongqing is crisscrossed with rivers possessing enormous energy. The over 600-kilometer Yangtze River in Chongqing has five big branches, namely the Jialing, Qujiang, Fujiang, Wujiang and Daning rivers, and over 100 small rivers. For many years, the average annual volume of local water in Chongqing has held 56.775 billion cubic meters, with an average annual volume of 383.737 billion cubic meters of water flowing through its territory; the potential hydropower reserve has totaled 22.98 million kilowatts, with a possible development capacity reaching 9.819 million kilowatts; the installed capacity of generators per square kilometer is three times the average level of the country; and its developed hydropower leads all the cities in China. In addition, Chongqing has abundant quantities of geothermal energy and potable mineral water with great potential for development.
