Cliff Carving in Hidden Valleys-sequel I
On the mountain cliffs at the mouth of the Leba Gully in Yushu is an image of Vairocana. On the left side of the images of Songsten Gampo and Princess Wencheng. On the right side of the Vairocana image is a carved inscription, said to be in the calligraphy of Princess Wencheng.
Because the rock bulges out, the rock face is exposed to the severe elements and there has been a lot of erosion: moreover, the rock itself is split and damaged, so the words are only faintly visible.
Along the Tongtian River, there is a Tibetan folk song that goes:
Sister Princess, please do not fear snow-capped mountains or the marshy land.
A hundred yaks are awaiting you.Sister Princess, do not fear rivers or lakes,A hundred yak skin boats are awaiting you.
The road along the narrow gully of the Tongtian River is wide enough only for a single vehicle. The Leba Gully has an elevation of 3,800 meters and is about 30 kilometers long. Throughout its length, there are rock carvings without end; on the mountain body itself, and on stones large and small in the rivers are carved with six-word mantras. It is said that these are all traces left over by Princess Wencheng and Princess Jincheng when they came to Tibet.
