China is a unified, multinational country. Of the 56 ethnic groups, the Han comprises 91.6 percent of the total population; all the other ethnic groups are traditionally referred to as "ethnic minorities". Eighteen such groups each have a population of l million or more, including the Zhuang, Manchu, Hui, Miao, Uygur, Yi, Tujia, Mongolian, Tibetan, Boyi, Dong, Yao, Korean, Bai, Hani, Li Kazakh and Dai. The Han are widely dispersed in China, but living mainly in the middle and lower reaches of the three rivers--the Yellow, Yangtze and Pearl Rivers, as well as the Northeast China Plain. Smallin population, the 55 ethnic minorities are found mainly in northeast, north, morthwest and southwest China. |
