China is both the birthplace of wine and the superpower of wine produc-tion. There were some famous wines in Chinese history. Grape wine and Tusu liquor in the Tang Dynasty were worth mention-ing. Grape wine was very popular at that time. The poet Wanghan of this pe-riod once sang high praise of wine in his Ode to Liangzhou. It was reported that grape wine was brought to China by Zhang Qian from the western coun-tries in the Han Dynasty. During the period of the Three Kingdoms grape was used to make wine. Up to the Tang Dynasty grape wine got very popular. Many poets praised it. The ancient Chinese drank Tusu liquor in Spring Festi-val. It was said that drinking Tusu liquor can keep people from sickness. Tusu liquor was spread to Japan in the Tang Dynasty. Now the Japanese are still in the habit of drinking it on the first day of a new year. Many famous Chinese wine of present day developed from ancient times -- mainly from the Ming and the Qing dynasties. On the 1st National Wine Appraisal Conference of 1952, eight brands of famous Chinese wine were awarded a prize: Guizhou Maotai, Shanxi Fenjiu, Shaanxi Xifeng, Luzhou Laojiao, Shaoxing Jiafan, Red Rose Grape Wine, Weimeisi and Special Fine Brandy. On the 2nd Nation-al Wine Appraisal Conference of 1963, eighteen brands of wine were awarded a prize: Maotai, Fenjiu, Xifeng, Luzhoulaojiao Twice Fully-fermented Liquor, Shaoxingjiafan, Red Rose Grape Wine, Weimeisi, Special Fine Brandy, Wuliangye, Gujinggong, Quanxing Twice Fully-fermented Liquor, Chinese Red Grape Liquor, Zhuyeqing, White Grape, Dongjiu, Special-Made Beijing Brandy, Chengang Liquor and Qingdao Beer. On the 3rd National Wine Ap-praisal Conference of 1979, another eighteen brands of wine were awarded a prize: Maotai, Fenjiu, Wuliangye, Gujinggong, Yanghe Twice Fully-fer-mented Liquor, Jiannanchun, Chinese Red Grape Wine, Yantai Weimeisi, Qingdao White Grape Wine, Special Fine Brandy, Dongjiu, Special-made Bei-jing Brandy, Luzhoulaojiao, Shaoxingjiafan, Zhuyeqing, Qingdao Beer, Yan-tai Red Grape Wine and Chengang Liquor.
