Painter Unknown (in the Song Dynasty) : Waterside Hibiscus |
|
Waterside Hibiscus ( picture No. 17, see p. 686) is a Flower and Bird Painting painted by a masterly painter from the Art Academy of the South Song Dynasty. The picture, in the shape of a silk fan, shows the beauty and color, noblily and purity of lotus emerging from the water. The flowers, sup-ported by the green leaves, look fresh and vigorous; and are particularly at-tractive with the red and green contrasting. In painting the picture, the painter first used pink color for the petals as a primer, then used dark red to make iridescent light and shadow and finally drew the veins and outline of the flowers. Using the boneless method, exceptional composition, deep and re-fined coloring, he successfully portrayed the bright, tasteful and elegant bear-ing of the hibiscus rising out of water, demonstrating its graceful and dignified appearance and its coming-out-of-dirty-mud-unsoiled nature of its character. An extremely beautiful world with flowers and birds was thus created. |
