Guqin Music: Xiao Xiang Water and Cloud |
| Xiao Xiang Water and Cloud was composed by Guo Min (styled Chuwang), a Qin player of Zhejiang school in the South-Song Dynasty. It was first published in the Mysterious Music Scores compiled by Zhu Quan in the Ming Dynasty. After Yuan military men invaded South-Song, Chuwang had to move to live near Mount Heng, Hunan Province and often travelled to the meeting point of Xiaojiang River and Xiangjiang River. He would never look up Mount Jiuyi enveloped in clouds without praising the beauty of the rivers and mountains and filled with painful recollections, deeply concerned about the dangers facing the nation. Therefore he composed Xiao Xiang Wa-ter and Cloud to express his concerned feelings. Beside an opening period and a coda, there are four parts with eighteen periods in it. So famous a piece it is that it has always been held in esteem by various schools of the Qin State play-ers since South-Song Dynasty. |
