Folk Songs of Mongol Nationality |
There are fifty-six nationalities in China. Though their proportion to the total population is small, minority nationalities are living over regions taking up 50 to 60 per cent of China' s total area. Some representative folk songs of the main ethnics are introduced in the following part. Folk songs of Mongol nationality may be classified into long-tune songs and minor songs. Long-tune songs are drawn out with free beats. They are deep and mild, with polished tune like that of Ma-tou-qin, a typical Mongolia musical instrument. There are, for example, Pastoral Song, Vast Grass-land, etc. Minor songs are characterized by short tunes, well-knit structures and well-balanced rhythms. Among them are the hunting songs and some love songs and wedding songs. Love songs and homesick songs take up an impor-tant place in folk songs of Mongol nationality. Riding Horse on the City Wall, which has been rearranged by Ma Sicong, the famous composer of Chi-na, as the violin solo Miss My Hometown, is very popular all over the world. |
