Wushu in the Dynasties of Qin and Nan and the Three States Period |
After the unification of the six states, First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty ordered to confiscate weapons all over the country, which de facto restrained Wushu activities among the folks. Nevertheless, a new free-handed duel called jiaodi, a kind of wrestling, got its hit at that time. In addition, some new weapons were invented such as iron mallet and stagger. At the beginning of the Han Dynasty, the ruler advocated that, to pre-vent the invasion of the Xiongnu nationality, the people in the border areas should all be mobilized for military training, which enhanced Wushu activities among the folks to a great degree. Meanwhile, the national forces improved their military technology and adapted their weapons in order to fight against the Xiongnu cavalrymen. New forms of weapons were added to the "five weapons" of bow, crossbow, halberd, shield, and sword. The word wuyi appeared in the Han Dynasty along with many Wushu masters and different sects and schools. Wuyi was a general name of free-handed or weapon combat skills and series, including those of actual fight and those for performance and exercises. |
