| In contrast with the still Dajin Lake, the Chishui danxia landform has flowing water. Danxia formations are widely dispersed across China, verying in type, shape and scenic value. Here visitors can get a taste of them. | Situated in Yingtan, Jiangxi Province, Longhu(Dragon and Tiger)Mountain has a danxia area of 80 square kilometers. and is one
of the most evolved danxia landform areas in China. Geologically it is a Mesozoic fault basin, in which thick Strata of purplish-red conglomerate, sandstone and volcanic rock were formed. Subsequent scouring and weathering ultimately shaped the landscape here into what it is today...a wealth of flat-top summits, hog back mountains, stockades, walls, ridges, cliffs, honeycomb caves, upright caves, rock pillars, rock peaks, peak forests, natural bridges, rock arches and "elephant trunks."
A feature of most of China's danxia landforms, because of their relative elevation, is majestic and precipitous. Longhu Mountain, however, is in its senior years in danxia topographical terms, so the relative elevation is low, 240 meters at the most, and thus appears graceful and enchanting. The danxia formations, in various shapes, are mainly
distributed over Longhu Mountain and Xianshuiyan(Celestial Water Rock)scenic areas, covering an area of about 40 square kilometers. The Luxi River flows through the scenic area, linking the danxia sights on the banks. Additionally, it is celebrated as the cradle of Chinese Taoism, with many coffins suspended on the cliffs of Xianshuiyan, dating back nearly two and a half thousand years to the Spring and Autumn Period(770 BC-476 BC)and the Warring States Period(475 BC-221 BC). |
