In the heart of Yuecheng Mountain. Where Hunan and Guangxi meet, there is a long, narrow basin of red conglomerate and sandstone, which took shape if the early Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic era, about 100 million years ago. Here, in the scenic area from Langshan Mountain. where Zijiang River(a tributary of the Yangtze) originates, to Bajiaozhai, you can find the danxia 1andform. which straddles Xinning County irl Hunan. where it covers an area of 77.5 square kilometers and Ziyuan County in Guangxi. where it covers an area of l 25 square kilometers. The Zijiang and Fuyi
rivers flow northward from the basin into the Dongting Lake, their banks as pretty as a picture.
Langshan Mountain is thick with danxia peak forests-like ten thousand bamboo shoots soaring into the sky, or ten thousand horses charging; its outstanding feature is its many deep-cut narrow valleys; because the sandstone has a larger proportion of limestone and conglomerate, the karst features are quite clear.
In the Bajiaozhai Scenic Area, there are over a hundred weirdly-shaped towering mountains, jagged rocks, red peaks, caves and valleys. One such, Conch Mountain. Is composed of four awl-shaped peaks, each over a hundred meters high and covered by exquisite whorls, just like gigantic conches. standing on a commanding height to look upon the panorama, all you can see is fold after fold of mountains, rising and
